15% Of Dublin Motorists Are The Victim Of Car Crime

Around 15% of Dublin motorists, almost 10% of motorists nationally, have been the victim of car crime within the last two years, according to new research. This disturbing revelation came from a recent online poll carried out by AA Insurance. From a total of 6,500 responses nationwide, 3.7% of motorists had either had their car stolen or had an attempt made to steal it in the last two years.

The survey also highlights depressing figures for car break-ins. 6.5% of people surveyed have had their cars broken into or an attempt was made to break into their car. Car crime is “clearly a major problem and one that is on the rise. It means a big bill and, for those who do not have no-claims discount protection, a rise in insurance costs” according to Conor Faughan from AA Ireland.

Over the years there has been a tremendous fight back against car crime. Modern day technology has helped to fight the battle and car crime statistics have been reduced. Technology like immobilisers will help to prevent car crime but like most things, there is always a way around it. Thieves are getting smarter and with the recession it is thought that car crime figures will tend to rise sharply.

Car thieves have changed their tactics and now focus on taking car keys off hall tables or key racks near your front door, simply by ‘fishing’ for them with a pole through the letterbox. As they say ‘Some burglars are always looking for windows of opportunity!!’, maybe letterboxes in this case.

Theft of keys is an area we need to be more aware of. Make sure to place your keys in a secure area when you come home. This will make the job of the car thief much tougher and the chances are that your car will still be in the drive way when you wake up in the morning!

With frightening statistics like those above you need to ensure that your car is insured. AXA will provide cheap car insurance and commercial van insurance quotes.
